Beethoven: 33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli, op. 120

The Diabelli Variations  are often considered to be the greatest set of variations for keyboard along with Bach's Goldberg Variations.  In early 1819 Diabelli, a well-known music publisher and composer, composed a waltz  and sent it to several eminent composers of the Austrian Empire -  including Schubert, Czerny, Hummel, and the Archduke Rudolph, asking each of them to write a variation on it. His plan was to publish all the variations and to use the profits to benefit the orphans and widows of the Napoleonic Wars. Beethoven despite thinking the theme was beneath him, wrote 33 just to prove his prowess...
