Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto no.1 in A minor,  op.33

Steven Isserlis takes the stage in Herculean fashion, performing both of Saint-Saëns’s cello concerti with the Festival Academy Orchestra in their first concert this year. The A minor cello concerto is one of Saint-Saëns’s most popular pieces, both charming and exhilarating, compact and seamless (all three movements played without interruption), Casals chose it for his London debut in 1905. The under-appreciated D minor concerto is more demanding and a powerful tour de force in the vein of concertos by Dvořak and Prokofiev.  The programme concludes with Haydn’s masterful and innovative 99th Symphony,  his first “London” symphonies, premiered in at the King's Theatre 1793, and his first to include clarinets adding sonority and power to the warmth of the piece's E flat tonality.
