Mozart: Symphony no. 35 in D major, K.385 “Haffner”

Beethoven: Piano Concerto no.5 in E flat major, op.73 “Emperor"

We close the 2027 Festival with Beethoven’s beautiful Emperor Concerto, dedicated to Archduke Rudolph and not to Napoleon, of whom he disapproved. Its virtuosic style and wide dynamic range is perfectly suited to the kind of concert piano which Beethoven can only have dreamed of. The beauty and serenity of the hymnlike middle movement is perhaps the reason why this is one of the world’s greatest pieces of music. Mozart’s Haffner symphony is arguably one of his most effervescent and characterful works. It feels like the perfect piece to open our Festival finale, and is still one of the most technically challenging works to perform from the classical era.
